Cuvaison
Carneros Chardonnay 2004
As with many wineries in California, Cuvaison suffered from Phylloxera in the
late 1980’s, but when re-planting, they opted to grow the finest Burgundian clones
and rootstocks planted closer together than previously and with new and improved
methods of training, all in all a serious statement of intent regarding quality.
Winemaker Steve Rogstad now has fruit of a higher quality than ever to work with,
which, coupled with his ‘minimal intervention’ approach, has taken these wines
to new heights, their style is elegant, understated and totally refined, with
a wonderfully pure yet ripe fruit. This is a fantastic wine that can deservedly
‘rub shoulders’ with many higher priced Burgundian offerings.
