The
Hess Collection ‘Artezin’ California Zinfandel 2005
Zinfandel is the Californian signature grape (even though it is AKA Primitivo
in southern Italy!) and is enjoying an ever increasing following both in the UK
and stateside. This ‘thundering oaf’ of a wine is a relative newcomer to Donald
Hess’ stable – the winery created the ‘Artezin’ label in 2003 and sourced grapes
from Napa, Amador and Mendocino – the state’s best ‘Zin’ regions. This is a big,
rounded, teeth-staining monster – not for the faint of palate! That said, there
is an abundance of sweet black fruit and a brambly richness with soft tannins.
