Bay Western Cape Pinotage 2006
Pinotage was ‘invented’ as recently as 1925 by a Professor Perold by crossing
Pinot Noir with Cinsault (known as Hermitage on the Cape). As yet, there does
not appear to be a definitive style for wine made from Pinotage, probably because
there is no established ‘European model’ for it to be based on. Some wines are
almost Beaujolais-esque in style, whilst others are very tough and serious. This
is one of the most appealing examples that I have encountered thus far with a
wealth of spicy black berry fruit character and soft, ripe tannins on the finish.
