Domaine La Haut Marone
Gigondas 2004
We were initially attracted to this by its price; as a Grenache dominated appellation,
Gigondas is second only to Châteauneuf-du-Pape in both reputation and (arguably)
quality, yet this comes in at the same sort of money as an ‘up-market’ Côtes du
Rhône-Villages. It is predominantly Grenache with some Syrah and Mourvèdre from
a particularly favourable plot on steep slopes in the shadow of les Dentelles
de Montmirail and spent 13 months in oak. Most importantly, the wine is superb;
richly concentrated, sleek and polished despite its obvious weight with a classic
peppery aroma.
