Chateau
Montus Madiran 2003
This is undisputedly the benchmark property for this Appellation in south-western
France, with proprietor Alain Brumont something of a legend in these parts. He
owns some 150ha (more than 10% of the AOC) of some of the best sites within this
highly diverse region. The dominant varietal here is Tannat (currently making
waves as a single varietal in Uruguay) which must comprise at least 40% of the
blend along with Cabernets Franc and Sauvignon. Brumont believes fervently in
green harvesting (at least 3 times), micro-oxygenation and good exposure to new
French oak. This ’99 is a serious, multi-layered wine with firm tannin and good
levels of acidity. There is abundant, but restrained fruit with excellent length.
