Proper Vinho Verde from the Minho region of north west Portugal, Franqueira is a 6ha estate on the site of an old monastery owned by Englishman, Piers Gallie near Barcelos. It is planted to Loureiro, Trajadura and a small amount of Azal. The resulting wine shows a lovely refreshing prickle of effervescence making for superb summer / lunchtime drinking; it is nicely balanced with zippy acidity and a gentle grapefruit sherbet-like fruit.
