Juan Gil ‘Monastrell-Monastrell’
Jumilla 2006
Monastrell is better known as Mourvèdre in southern France or Mataro in Australia,
but outside of Bandol (Yummy but expensive!) I defy anybody to find a better example
than this chunky offering from Jumilla to the south of Valencia. It weighs in
at a hefty 14.5% but carries it extremely well, having the necessary fruit and
a firm but gentle tannic grip. This remarkable Bodega was only established in
2003, in fact, construction of the winery did not actually start until March of
the same year! Last years purchase of a further 50ha of gnarled old (45 years)
Monastrell vines at 825m should ensure that supplies do not quite run out quite
so quickly this year, and that quality remains consistently high.
