‘Alaia’ Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León 2005
The nearest town is Benevente, but this 300ha estate (180 planted); complete with
its own reservoir is, quite frankly, in the middle of nowhere! Even more obscure,
however, is the dominant grape variety here; Prieto Picudo (50%) which is not
grown anywhere else as far as I know. The ‘Alaia’ blend also includes 35% Tempranillo
and 15% Merlot and has 10 months in first and second year American oak. As with
most Spanish wines, hl/ha here are low, giving wines of amazing quality and complexity
at the price. Alaia has a beguiling aroma of violets and limes with a lovely juicy
acidity on the palate with a nice, compact fruit.
