IGT Irpinia Aglianico 2006
Aglianico is one of the best as well as probably being Italy’s oldest know grape
variety. It is a dark skinned grape of Greek origin (the name is a corruption
of Ellenico - the Italian word for Hellenic) that has made itself particularly
at home on the volcanic soils of Italy’s ‘deep south’, in particular in Campania
and in Basilicata. Lucio Mastroberardino has made a young, IGT wine that has not
been given any barrel aging; it is a pleasingly complex and balanced wine somewhat
in the style of a creamy textured, Cabernet Sauvignon but with excellent, balancing
acidity.
