‘Revello’ Barolo 2003
At its best, Barolo is indisputably Italy’s greatest red wine and can run for
considerable sums of money. This example is representative without being prohibitively
expensive; in fact, I think that this is superb value for money. Happily, the
dried out, overtly tannic/devoid of fruit style all too common in the 1980’s is
not seen so often now, although some more masochistic drinkers still maintain
that this is the style of ‘proper, traditional’ Barolo. This allows you to pick
out the tell-tale Nebbiolo characteristics of tobacco, leather, spice and violets
enhanced by a restrained level of tannin.
